The guard thwarts the convicts escape. Second escape, which failed becouse the convict has saved a guard from the river, turns their hatred into a deep friendship. The guard helps the convict during his new escape. The convict, obsessed with freedom, runs. The guard gives up in the last moment and kills him, realizing, however, that he has killed himself also.
